Artist Paul Landry captured the magic of Bedford Falls in It’s a Wonderful Christmas, and he has done the same with everyone’s other holiday favorite, A Christmas Story.

Last year, artist Paul Landry paid tribute to one of his favorite films, the holiday classic, A Christmas Story.

Inspired by humorist Jean Shepherd’s tale of the holidays in smalltown America, Landry brought to life the magic that has made this film a favorite with fans of all ages.This year, we move in for a close-up of the Parkers’ home on Cleveland Street, focusing on the Old Man’s “Major Award”—a garish lamp in the shape of a woman’s leg.

Artist Paul Landry is known for his images of colorful gardens and scenes of maritime life. In his latest fine art limited edition, A Sailor's Garden, Landry combines both of these worlds to create both a beautiful composition and a collector's dream come true. Radiant with hues and warm with nostalgic ambiance, Landry's images tenderly wed flowers with our own universal fond memories. His own love of gardening is his inspiration. Of A Sailor's Garden, Landry says "Even though the sailor may be at sea for months at a time and enjoy it immensely, he also loves the time spent in his garden caring for the earth. Paul reminisces, "For generations, schooners have harvested the rich fishing banks off Nova Scotia. They could be out for weeks at a time, fishing ’til their vessels could hold no more, before racing back home knowing first in brought the best price. In the 1930s and ’40s, my Uncle Joe and his sons sailed these crafts and told me many a sea story. This painting honors them and all seamen who sailed these magnificent schooners." Paul Landry fondly remembers his autumn visits to Aunt Martha’s farm and tasting the secret ingredient of her apple pie. “She didn’t live very far from us but it always seemed like a long ride because we couldn’t wait to get there,” recalls Paul. “She had vegetable bins filled to overflowing, baskets of glorious flowers, big pumpkins waiting to be carved and plenty of green and red apples for making pies. But when she baked her apple pie, you had to be quick. They were the perfect blend of sweet and tart and she’d tempt you with warm slices. Who could resist?”

Crimson and gold maple leaves, fragrant with the earthy aroma of the season, drift gently down. The old barn is filled with late harvest abundance. Crisp apples, sweet and tart, will be eaten on the ride home or squirreled away for Thanksgiving pies and applesauce. Pots of bright chrysanthemums wait outside, looking for a home on your front stoop, along with the first couple of pumpkins that are ready for carving or eating. When we were children, winter meant one thing: snowy fun. It meant days off from school spent building snowmen, sledding down the tallest, scariest hill in town or stockpiling snowballs for the battle of the year. As adults, we often lose sight of the magic of winter amidst thoughts of shoveling the driveway or frozen water pipes. We forget the simple pleasures of skating on a frozen pond, mitten-in-mitten with a loved one. As Paul tells us, “I like to imagine that my grandmother Cecilia, a sea captain’s wife, grew up in a harborside garden like this one. I can see her stepping lightly down the footpath, setting a basket upon the dew-rich grass, and tending each lovely flower with a gentle hand....”

When I travel through my hometown, and all the towns of New England, there are certain places that prompt a special memory. I remember that, as a paperboy in my youth, I got up very early to fold the papers, put them in my sack, and hop on my old bike. I made sure all my customers had something to read with their breakfasts.

The streets were wonderfully wide in some places, but just about a car's width in others. I loved the hills... that went down. I also loved the the roads I took each day, and I even loved the change of seasons -- from the freezing winters when I braved the deep snow, to the spring with its bird songs and daffodils, to hot summers when I'd go swimming the minute I'd get back home, to the bright leaves lit the way every day.

I always loved those memories, and I hope you see why I share them so freely.
