Something
old,
something
new... The
old bridge
in Emmerts
Cove was
here long
before Jim
Gray first
painted the
mountain
streams.
This is now
the newest
covered
bridge in
Tennessee,
yet it
evokes a
sense of
time gone by
that is so
in keeping
with the
wishes of
the citizens
of Pittman
Center; that
the mountain
heritage be
preserved. |

The sights
and smells
of Autumn
bring back
memories.
Long walks
in the
woods... new
bales of
hay...
firewood,
cut split
and stacked
for
Winter....
piles of
raked leaves
to jump and
roll in...
and the good
smells of
things being
baked in the
kitchen.
Autumn is
still one of
my favorite
times of the
year. |

For
generations
the
foothills of
East
Tennessee
have been
utilized as
fertile
farmland and
pasture.
Fencerows
established
years ago
mark the
boundaries
of rural
fields that
stand at the
edges of
both the
Great Smoky
Mountains
National
Park and the
bustling
gateway
communities
at its
borders. The
warm Autumn
sun shines
across this
beautiful
countryside
and casts
lengthening
shadows as
both the day
and the year
draw ever
closer to
another
ending and
the new
beginning
that will
surely
follow. |

The light of
a winter
evening
reflects in
the still
waters of
McCaully
branch as it
passes the
hay barn in
Cades Cove.
This section
of the Great
Smokies
preserves a
portion of
the Park
where man
and nature
found common
ground for
more than a
century and
both have
flourished.
A trip
through
Cades Cove
this time of
year brings
to mind when
holidays
were
celebrated
in simpler,
yet often
more
meaningful,
ways. |

The hush of
fresh snow
has settled
across Cades
Cove in the
Great Smoky
Mountains
National
Park. Hand
split rail
fences
surround the
homestead
fields where
generations
were born,
raised, and
grew old. At
almost any
time,
wildlife
ranging from
bear to
chipmunks
can be seen
within the
boundaries
of the cove.
On this day,
with deep
snow on the
fields, the
deer remain
in the woods
to browse on
new bark and
tender pine
needles
which are
not so
deeply
covered.
High in a
barren tree,
a lone hawk
surveys his
territory
and serves
as a
reminder
that we must
each watch
over this
world in
order that
our children
may also
have such
places of
beauty to
enjoy. |

"His
territory
was the old
Church
Street
Cemetery, in
Mobile,
Alabama. Mr.
Tullis spent
his days
there
strolling in
the shade of
the huge
ancient oak
trees, often
stooping to
pick up any
litter that
might mar
the beauty
of the
place. He
would sit
for hours in
the sun of
the crisp
Autumn days.
Jim found
him there
one morning
a few years
ago. They
sat and
talked. Jim
sketched and
took a few
photographs
of the self
appointed
old
Caretaker"".
Jim recalls,
""He had a
small Bible
in his
pocket and
several
rings on his
fingers, a
real
character,
full of
yarns and
home spun
philosophy.
You could
tell the sun
felt good on
his back as
we sat
together.""
A couple of
years later,
Jim ran
across the
sketches and
photos...
""it was
time to
paint!"" The
old man is
gone now,
but his
spirit lives
on with this
painting.""" |
