On one of Jim's many painting trips to the Cumberland Plateau he came across this barn. It was a cold January day. Rain was slowly falling. Fog lurking in the distance. To Jim the barn in this setting represented a friendly place, a safe haven from the elements.

Jim and Fran were rambling familiar old back roads during this recent beautiful autumn. As always, they were enjoying the day and looking for subject matter for paintings. There were clouds obscuring the mountains as they headed up a beautiful little valley in Pittman Center, Tennessee. Photos, sketches, and memories were gathered. One favorite place was used to plan a full sheet watercolor. After the watercolor was started and really coming along well, Jim began to wonder about what mountain might have been hidden behind the clouds. Another trip back on a clearer day revealed the ridge leading up to Greenbrier Pinnacle. It was a bit of a challenge to work the mountains into the painting that was so far along by now, but seeing them rising above the surroundings he knew the painting would be better for his efforts. Often there are times in life when it takes a little extra effort but the results of rising above are always worth it.
