As he has
done so
often, Jim
"sees" what
so many only
look at. A
few moments
of late
afternoon
sunlight
that burns
through
thinning
leaves and
branches
along a
country road
might go
unnoticed if
not for the
eye and
brush of Jim
Gray. |

Isaiah 55:12
“For ye
shall go out
with joy,
and be led
forth with
peace:
the
mountains
and the
hills shall
break forth
before you
into
singing,
and all the
trees of the
field shall
clap their
hands.”
This is one
of the most
joyful
passages in
all the Old
Testament
writings.
You are
invited to
partake of
the peace
found in
these Smoky
Mountains
and to clap
your hands
and sing
along. |

A flock of
Canada Geese
has taken up
residence on
the calm
waters of
the
Tennessee
River, which
runs past
Jim's studio
in
Knoxville.
The overcast
sky is heavy
with wet
snowflakes
which have
just begun
to drift
straight
down and
capture the
attention of
the
gathering
flock. One
by one the
geese have
maneuvered
for position
on the
fallen tree.
As the final
pair
approach,
one has to
wonder if
they will
also be able
to climb on
board and
join in this
unique "Log
Jam". |

Mother
Nature has
spread a
blanket of
white across
the
countryside.
Sounds are
muffled and
the pace of
life slows a
bit. The air
is cold and
crisp, but
the beauty
of this day
warms the
heart.
Murphy's
Chapel has
seen many
winter snows
come and go.
The folks
who come to
give thanks
here, as
well as
those who
just drive
by, have all
had a
glimpse of
how
wonderful
"Peace on
Earth" could
be. |

The Great
Smoky
Mountains
are among
the oldest
natural
formations
in our
country.
Time and the
elements
have taken
peaks that
once were
once twice
this tall,
barren and
jagged, and
sculpted
them into
the forested
beauty that
we now
enjoy. The
vast
diversity of
tree
species,
both
deciduous
and
evergreen,
make the
autumn
season
spectacular
to behold.
From the
Boyd’s
mountain
cabin,
situated
high in
Blount
County, the
view on this
clear
October day
is
unparalleled.
Mankind may
well debate
the rest of
our days
about the
specifics of
the Creation
of all
things in
the
Universe,
but looking
out on these
majestic
mountains
can leave no
doubt that
the hand of
the Divine
has been
here.

The Great
Smoky
Mountains
abound with
hundreds of
wildflowers
and
flowering
shrubs.
Among these,
one of the
most
beautiful is
the
Rhododendron.
Growing in
massive
thickets or
"slicks", at
the many
elevations,
the
Rhododendron
is
identified
by the year
round
foliage of
heavy green
leaves.
During the
winter
months,
these leaves
serve as a
natural
thermometer
by rolling
up tightly
as the
temperature
drops.
Visitors to
the Park are
rewarded
with
Rhododendron
"slicks" in
full bloom
during the
months of
June and
July. The
trail to the
Chimneys,
the Laurel
Falls trail
and the
Cades Cove
trails to
Abrams Falls
are all
exceptional
locations to
see this
native plant
throughout
the year.
Jim Gray has
once again
captured the
beauty of
the Smoky
Mountain
Wildflowers
in his
Spring 1986
release of
"Rhododendron". |
