BOSSE FIELD

OLD POST OFFICE

OLD COURT HOUSE

DOWNTOWN

Under the leadership of Ben Bosse, the school board built a baseball stadium in Garvin Park.  It was, of course, named Bosse Field.  Over the years, several professional baseball teams have called Bosse Field home.  In 1915, over 8000 people attended the dedication of June 17, 1915.

In 1874 work began on the US Customhouse and Post Office located on Second Street.  The building was used as the central post office until 1969.  The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

At the time of its completion in 1891, the courthouse was the tallest and most imposing structure in the city.  The courthouse served the Vanderburgh County for 78 years before it was closed in 1969.
It is listed on the National Register of Historical Places.

In 1972 the Downtown pedestrian walkway was built with funding through a combination of Downtown merchants, the City of Evansville and the federal goverment.

PADDLE BOAT

WILLARD LIBRARY

REITZ HOME

VICTORY THEATER

River transportation was vital to the growth of Evansville.  Steamboats were an economical way to ship goods and they provided a faster way for people to travel.  Packet boats were vessels that were built to carry passengers as well as freight.  They could be seen daily on the waterfront at Evansville.

The Willard Library was named after Willard Carpenter who was a entrepreneur and philanthropist.  Construction of the building started in 1876.  However, due to the depressed economy, it was not completed until 1882.  The interior was finished in select quarter-grain oak.  The doorways and grand staircase today make an impressive model of Victorian Gothic architecture.  Willard Library in listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The John A. Reitz Home was built in 1871 at 224 S.E. First Street, and has been restored to serve as a museum.  The home was built in French Second Empire Style and is three stories high.  It has slate mansard roof, dormer windows, cast iron window enframements and elegant decorations.  The home contains seventeen rooms including servant's quarters and a large carriage house in the rear.

The theater was part of the Sonntage Hotel-Victory Theater at Sixth and Main Streets.  The theater opened to the public June 16, 1921.  With a total of 2500 seats, the theater was air conditioned (cooled with commercial ice).  The victory featured a daily program of four vaudeville acts, a movie, a comedy routine, organ music and a ten-piece orchestra.

C & EI

FOUR FREEDOMS MONUMENT

OLD JAIL

UNIVERSITY OF EVANSVILLE

The C&EI Railroad Station at Eight and Main streets was started in 1882.  The three story brick building had stone appointments and four columns in front that added to its beauty.  during World War II, the station was used as a USO for visiting servicemen.  In 1961 the building was razed.  The four columns were kept in storage and eventually used as the apex of the Four Freedoms Monument.
The Four Freedoms Monument was erected as a tribute during the celebration of the United States Bicentennial in 1976.  Placed on a circular base, the four columns are surrounded by markers commemorating each of the fifty states.

The Old Jail and Sheriff's Residence was constructed on a model of a German castle at the same time the court house was built in 1891.
