This
painting
was a
labor of
love. I
enjoy
painting
loose
and
spontaneous,
but also
love to
put in
detail
that is
the
essence
of a
subject
like
this.
Being
raised
in a
time of
noticeable
changes
in our
country
we have
seen the
small
town
general
stores,
once in
abundance,
are now
near
extinction.
I was
lucky
that
back in
1968 I
took my
reference
photos
of this
one, I
never
throw
any
thing
away.
It was
with an
old
black &
white
film
polaroid
camera,
but it
enabled
me to
preserve
the old
store in
time to
paint
later.

Even
though
the hawk
is the
obvious
subject
matter
and the
main
focal
point,
this
painting
is as
much
about
the
background
as the
hawk. I
love the
mystery
and
beckoning
of just
what is
around
the next
corner
on
country
lanes.
The Red
Tailed
Hawk,
one of
my
favorite
birds of
prey, is
intensely
awaiting
for his
prey to
emerge
from the
brush
along
the
lane.
